What's so special about Woldburg?
It will an open air museum that offers both an opportunity for accommodation to anyone, regardless of their historical knowledge or their affiliation to certain societies, as well as food and bevereges to all visitors who spend the night, at no extra cost and only from locally grown food. Our wish is to produce all of the food and drinks that will be consumed here and to offer a chance of "old school" living, crafting, eating and drinking to all that are willing to experience it.
How large will it be?
It all depends on the available funds, but we hope to get about 20 hectares of land (50-ish acres) that will mostly be used for pastures and agriculture, while the rest will be built upon. Think of a rather large longhouse and up to 15 supportive structures, like huts, sheds, barns and workshops. Of course, all this can be read in more detail on our website that could also use some traffic.
When will Woldburg be completed and open to visitors?
It all depends on how well the project is received by all of you and how well we manage to promote it. If we manage to promote it well, we can expect to have access to a lot more funds and more funds equals faster building and sooner opening date + larger scale. We've discussed our project with the local authorities and we have their support, so we don't expect delays in respect to bureaucracy, but one can never know, so the project might get delayed for a number of unexpected issues (though we hope that won't be the case).
In short, with some luck and money we can get it done in about 1 year (anything can be built fast with A LOT of money and many workers).
Why Transylvania (or Romania, for that matter)?
Because it simply offers the best chances for the building of a successful and inhabitable village. Not only is it a land renowned for its mythical creatures and legends, but it's also a place where traditional living survived into the 21st century. Since we plan to rely on traditional farming, is there anything better than having people who lived in a traditional way build it, in a place where such things are still practiced?
Apart from that, these lands were largely depopulated when the Transylvanian Saxons emigrated to Germany in the early 1990's, which means that there is plenty of land available at affordable prices and we can build something wonderful with only a fraction of the costs for a similar project in Western Europe.
"The great thing about Romania and Transylvania, in particular, it's that we have so much that we can learn [...] It is the last corner of Europe where you see true sustainability and complete resilience... and the maintenance of entire ecosystems to the benefit of mankind and also for nature. There is so much we must learn from that before it's too late." - Prince Charles of Wales, Travel Channel's Wild Carpathia.
I live in America/Australia/Asia/Africa, why should I care about a European project?
First of all, this is a fairly new concept; if you would like something similar built near you, local entrepreneurs need a clear indication that there is a market for such a thing.
Secondly, we believe everyone should visit Europe at least once in their lifetime, so why not visit Transylvania while you're at it and live medieval for a couple of days in the Old World? We promise a unique experience, in a unique land that you are sure to enjoy and we'll offer our assistance if you wish to come visit.
What is Woldburg's political stance?
Woldburg DOES NOT have a political stance. Politics is a divisive subject, while our purpose and hope is to unite people from all over the World.
Plenty of people have been involved in the planning of this project in various degrees and nobody was brought in based on their political views. Therefore, our own personal ideas are quite diverse and we are entitled to have them, but nobody is allowed to be political in any way in Woldburg or in Woldburg's name and absolutely nobody will be permitted to hijack this project for any kind of political activism, or try to change anyone's political views. Remember that there were not that many political activists or elections in those times. With all the things going on in this World right now, we truly want to keep Woldburg politics free and offer people a safe haven, away from sensationalist news.
Simply put, we don't care where you come from and what you want to talk about in your spare time. As long as you are passionate about the Migration Period or if you are interested/curious in that part of history, you are one of us and will be treated as such.
What if the project won't manage to secure any funding?
Hey, what kind of talk is that? You need to think positive here... but yeah, we are strongly considering that options, since without enough support from the public it might be almost impossible to convince any bank, person or authority to put money in this project.
Here's the thing, though: we might at least get enough money to purchase a couple of traditional Saxon houses from Transylvania that are centuries old and invest in restoring and using them as guesthouses, while their yards and land could be used for agriculture and activities.
