Greetings,
Fish was a reliable food source for people on river banks or islands. Even as fish fast starts to stink and rot was many times in the bag of travelers or in diet of armies on campaign. Once smoked it will last way longer. How te get fish? Since we are talking about medieval times we can think of the easiest way to get fish: spear, net or basket. Spear needs concetration and skill. To use the net requires a boat or thenet must be held by two guys or just to be streched across the river. Basket however it is a way of getting fish without even guarding it. The basket is just simply put into the river and anchored(for example tied to a tree with a rope) and left over night. the next day can be pulled aut and checked if there is fish inside.
Example of fishing basket

While fish has always been a great part of man's diet, obtaining it is limited by the available terrain. Artificially created ponds don't count.
If a river of some kind is available, I'd argue that spearfishing would be a very enjoyable activity, though.

That's why the basket is best option, after all you can do your daily activities meanwhile fishes get trapped inside. Basket wouldn't work in lake or sea (except if is pulled by someone). In river it is automated process because the basket has the entry hole facing the current. To fish with spear, in my opinion you need calm water, maybe even lake. However if you must feed a lot of mouths then certainly it is not the first choice.

There are a couple of ponds in the area where one might try some spear fishing. Also, to the south there's the Olt river and there's a particular spot on that river where I know that a guy was feeding the fish daily. He told me to cast the line in that general area and I caught a few of them within minutes. Perhaps the same technique could be applied with the basket: throw bait in the water everyday so that you'd have more fish hanging around that spot.

Sounds like a good start for getting fish. We should see how fish can be smoked so it lasts longer.

Are the members of the community going to rely on fishing as a constant source of food?

It depends on the location, after all. If we are close to a productive fishing area, we will pretty much have to rely on fish.
